The State Hermitage is a museum of fine and decorative arts located in the Winter Palace complex in the heart of St. Petersburg. Today, the Hermitage is one of the largest and most important artistic and cultural and historical museums in the world.
The history of the Museum began with an art collection privately acquired by empress Catherine II. Initially, this collection was housed in a special wing of the palace, the Hermitage (from French ermitage, meaning a place of solitude, a cell, a shelter of a hermit, a recluse; now the building is called the Small Hermitage), which later gave the name to the museum as a whole. In 1852, the greatly expanded collection was transformed into a museum opened for public, which was housed in the New Hermitage, specially constructed for the purpose.
The State Hermitage Museum is listed among the twenty most visited art museums in the world. You are welcome to visit it too!
