Tsarskoye Selo is a Museum-reserve in Pushkin, which is a Palace and Park ensemble of the XVIII-XIX centuries.
The main attraction of the ensemble is the Catherine Palace, built for Empress Catherine I in 1724.
The palace, built in the Baroque style, is amazing in its size, powerful spatial dynamics and picturesque decor. The facades of the palace are decorated with the figures of Atlantes and Caryatids, and gilded lion masks. The gilded heads of the Palace Church rise above the Northern building, and the Southern one has a dome with a multi–pointed golden star on the spire.
The decorations of the halls of the palace, extending as a suite throughout the building, are also luxurious. The halls are fascinating in their variety of styles and decor: huge two-tiered windows and an abundance of gold carvings in the Great Hall, silk with printed patterns and mosaic parquet in the Blue parlor, walls painted with scenes from Chinese life, and classic motifs of ceiling painting in the Chinese living room.
The real treasure of the Catherine Palace, its crown jewel, is the Amber Room. The unique decoration of the room is made of 22 large panels supplemented by 180 amber boards; it also features narrow mirror pilasters and ornaments in the form of female heads, shields, tulips and roses. The decoration of the rooms is elegantly complemented by the plafond "Wisdom Protecting Youth from Temptations of Love", and the mosaic parquet of the rarest types of wood. During the Great Patriotic War, the amber panels were looted. For 25 years, painstaking restoration of the room was carried out. And on the 300th anniversary of St. Petersburg, the Amber room reemerged and impressed the visitors of the Catherine Palace with all its splendor.
